Master of Science in Nuclear Medicine Technology (MSNMT)

Master of Science in Nuclear Medicine Technology (MSNMT)

According to the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) code of practice, the nuclear medicine technologist is responsible for the safe use of ionizing and nonionizing radiation and molecular imaging for diagnostic, therapeutic, and research purposes. The technologist will review the patient’s medical history to understand the patient’s illness, medical issue, and pending diagnostic or treatment procedure; instruct the patient before, during, and following the procedure; evaluate the satisfactory preparation of the patient before beginning a procedure; and recognize emergency patient conditions and initiate lifesaving first aid when appropriate. Administrative functions may include supervising other technologists, students, and other personnel; participating in procuring supplies and equipment; documenting laboratory operations; implementing radiation safety protocols and taking an active role in radiation reduction programs; contributing to departmental inspections conducted by various licensing, regulatory, and accrediting agencies; participating in departmental quality assurance or quality improvement projects; and participating in scheduling patient procedures.

Nowadays, nuclear medicine technology plays an important role in the healthcare sector, as it is going to have its own functional entity among the diagnostic departments as well as oncology departments. It has a unique property as it has theranostic utilities (diagnostic and therapeutic applications). Moreover, it includes different radiologic modalities in the form of hybrid imaging modalities that give both anatomical and functional diagnostic information. For these reasons, the demand for nuclear medicine facilities and nuclear medicine technology specialists is increasing rapidly. The Saudi healthcare sector is in demand for a large number of nuclear medicine technologists (we are proudly the only college that provides them to the market in the kingdom and the region). Nowadays, the Ministry of Health in KSA is establishing nuclear medicine units in each hospital all around the kingdom, equipped with up-to-date facilities, which will provide a large number of job opportunities.

Currently, we are the only college that offers a graduate degree in the nuclear medicine technology program in Saudi Arabia or the Middle East.
