Clinical Training & Internship Unit

The College’s Clinical Training and Internship Unit has been established to create the appropriate environment for training students during laboratory, clinics, hospital and intensive training, with the aim of providing students with cumulative clinical skills related to different academic levels during and after didactic course levels.

One of the priorities of the clinical training unit in the faculty is to follow up the training of students to complete the requirements of the year of internship and training during the study in coordination with the accredited training bodies, according to students needs and according to the absorptive capacity of each side.

Mission

Providing training programs in the clinical training and internship to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills for the practice of medical science and health care, to develop proper medical attitudes and ethics in accordance with Islam values, and to apply academic skills and knowledge in their professional fields.

Objectives

  • Preparation of rules and regulations for clinical training and internship.
  • Coordinate with the hospitals and healthcare providers by signing MOU to train internships students.
  • Prepare reports on the progress of the clinical training process and evaluate their utilization.
  • Coordination with different academic department to prepare the students to pass the tests of the Saudi Health Specialties Commission.

What is an internship?

A period of time spent by student in clinical training after completion of study plan requirements that qualify him/her for professional practice in their specialization. The internship duration is spent by the intern under training in number of departments related to his/her specialty will be as the followings:

– 48 – 52 weeks for regular students.

– 32 weeks for bridging students.

Internship Objectives:

  • To apply and refine medical knowledge through clinical training.
  • To act independently and master decision process making.
  • To coherently work with other medical team members, know their limitations and how to seek advice when needed appropriately.
  • To deal with patient and his relatives professionally.
  • To acquire non clinical skills needed by physician such as: communication skills, presentation skills, administrative skills and others.
  • To apply Muslim physician code of ethics in all of his deeds and adhere to it at all times.

Entry requirements

Student should pass all study plan hours of their specialty successfully at rate at least 2, and no exception for any student who did not finish all his/her study plan hours.

Internship duration

  • 48 – 52 weeks for high school holders (regular students).
  • 32 weeks for diploma holder from same specialty (bridging program’s students).

The beginning of internship year

The internship year will start when all the students finished their credit hours in the semester after the deans’ approval to start their training.

The entities for internship:

The hospitals or the medical centers accredited by the colleges for trainings.

Terms and conditions of student’s pass

  • To pass internship, the student must finish all the stages that been determined by each department according to the accredited academic plan outlined in the clinical training manual of internship Log Book, and to pass the assessment specified by the department.
  • If student fail in assessment in one of the internship stages – regardless if it is basic or sub stage- or in a case of exceeded absenteeism in a particular stage and if the student violates or/and break the colleges/hospital training rules the student will consider as failed and he/she should repeat the specific period based on the recommendation of the head of the department along with dean’s decision and the students will be responsible for: Academic consequences: Graduates delay. Financial consequences: The student shall bear the fees for returning the specific training period
  • In case of absence with an acceptable excuse the student will compensate his/her absence duration at the end of internship year.

Vacations and absence system during Internship

  • Only 14 days applied as a vacation to internship regular students and 9 days for bridging students (five successive days maximum) during internship year. the vacation days cannot be taken all at once during training only if student takes the approval of internship supervisor and clinical training and internship unit.
  • The internship students are entitled to Saudi Arabian official holidays as set by the government to the employees on privet or public sector according to the entity where the student spend his/her internship.
  • The internship students are entitled to take emergency leave may be granted for a maximum of three days to be approved by hospitals’ training supervisor and colleges training supervisor before, in order to cover the missing days under his/her financial responsibilities.
  • The internship students are entitled to take special leave (marriage, born delivery, travel) to be approved by hospitals’ training supervisor and colleges training supervisor before, in order to cover the missing days under his/her financial responsibilities.
  • Unexcused absence for one day considered as an early warning to cancel the whole internship duration or a part of it.
  • In case of unexcused absence for 3 days, the training will be canceled in the part in which the students are trained, and they must compensate it at the end of internship year. In case of absence repetition, training duration will be canceled as a whole.

Terms of internship transferring

  • Students are not allowed to change their training headquarter after the training request has been sent.
  • Students who change their headquarter without advance notice to the college will be exposed to retrain their internship since their move in accordance to the dean’s decision on the recommendation of clinical training and internship unit.
  • If student refuses college’s guidance to any of accredited training entities, student has to bear the consequences of his/her action and he/she will ensure training place without any liability on the college’s part and the students will be responsible for: Academic consequences: Graduates delay. Financial consequences: The student shall bear the fees for returning the specific training period.

Postponing

  • Intern is entitled to postpone his/her internship with acceptable excuse for a maximum of 3 months after the departments’ training supervisor approval that been accredited by the admission and registration affairs. Dean. and student has to bear consequences of his/ her postponing such as: delayed graduation.

Intern's responsibilities

  • Student should commit to the intern’s job description.
  • Student is obliged to attend and leave in the official working hours or according to the instructions of each section in commensurate with the operational plan for each section in training site.
  • Student is obliged to alternate cover required by the section that he/she works with in training site.
  • Student should follow instructions and regulations of training site that he/she works with.
  • Student should oblige to the hospitals’ obligations. In case of suspension of an intern by the hospital, the internship will be suspended as well according to the college system, and student will be responsible for seeking to another approval, thus suspension duration will not be counted within internship year.
  • The dean has the right in accordance to departments’ training supervisor and clinical training and internship unit to cancel the training if student absent without a good reason or breach of college or training site regulations.
  • Disciplinary regulations will be applied on intern who violates college’s regulation.

Interns’ evaluation system

  • Student will be subjected to the evaluation that accredited by the supervisor of his/her training site and then by the colleges according to colleges accredited evaluation form.

Internship enrollment requirements

  • A photocopy of academic record, national ID or valid residency based on the training site requirements.
  • Filling out the require forms of the college and obtaining the financial approval.

Internship financial system

  • Colleges will pay training fees as agreed with training sites.
  • Any delay or retraining of any part of training the student will bear the whole financial consequence.
  • In case of repetition of internship for reasons related to student or non-compliance of college’s system or training sites, the student must cover the full cost of internship.

Requirements for receiving Graduation Certificate

1- Fill clearance form from registration office.

2- Submit passport photocopy.

3- Submit training certificate/s with start & end date.

4- Submit training evaluation signed from training supervisor.

5- Submit student ID to registration office.

6- For Radiology & Nuclear medicine students submit (TLD) device.

7- Pay 2000 SR as graduation fees.

 

Note that the graduation certificates will be issued after 48 hours of completion of graduation requirements.
